Hi my name is Falaq Nadeem. I am 17 years old. I live in Richmond, CA. The piece I made is knitted. I started to learn knitting during the beginning of the school year. This piece I made is called “Cable Heart”. This art was made with teal knitting yarn, knitting needle size 10.5, and a double pointed needle. I knitted a piece and the pattern I knitted is a cable heart pattern. I used REPETITION because its shape is used to create a continuous shape together to make it seem moving. I used PATTERN because so the knitting piece wouldn’t be blank and be bored of it. I used SHAPE to add more creativity and unique to the piece. I used different TEXTURE so the knitting would have bumps and show the softness of the yarn. I made this piece to show one of my skills. As I was making this, I wanted to use a pattern to show how much I love knitting. Using the cable heart pattern to show how much love and effort I put into knitting.
My name is Michael Briones and I’m currently taking an Art class at my school. I wouldn’t say I’m very experienced at art, but it is definitely interesting learning about the different types and styles there is to it, and I’ve learned a lot about it through my class. The art piece that I made is called “The World is Art”, which uses collage of papers cut up to create a mosaic-like image of the planet. I originally sketched the globe with a pencil so I’d have a base to start it, and then began going through magazines that had colors that I felt would look nice and really try to show the land and water of the world. I used color by showing focusing on the two different colors ,blue and green, while using multiple shades of each color so it would create a more diverse image. I also used shapes by cutting the paper into different shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids to create the mosaic look to it. Variety and Repetition are also seen in the image as I stuck to the same shades color with the blue and green, while also giving a variety of shapes so it wouldn’t be just one shape the whole time as that would get boring. I was interested in making this piece as right now as we have to stay home, we are limited to what we can use, but pretty much anything can be art. I decided to create the planet because our world as a whole is art, even though we are confined to the indoors, we can see all that art once again after this quarantine is done. There are plenty of things people missed from staying home whether it’s school, work, events, or parties, but our green and blue planet should be kept safe.
Hello, my name is Jaziell! I’m a student who loves flowers and light colors, and I enjoy expressing myself through them. My favorite form of art is poetry because it’s the easiest for me, but painting and drawing are fun as well. I am from the East bay and have grown up in Richmond. This piece is called, “Floral Safari.” I thought of this piece when I was trying to figure out what a yellow flower could look like, and for some odd reason I thought of a lion. It was made with flowers and a pencil sketch. First, I sketched out the lion, then I added flowers on top to fill in the lion’s mane. The lion’s mane is the emphasis in my piece and it could definitely draw anyone’s attention. I love colorful things so my whole creation has color, but as you’ll notice some of the colors are very light in contrast to the flowers and leaves. I did this purposefully because I wanted to draw attention to the natural things I used, and because I like light colors that flow together. I used balance in my drawing by adding different things, not everything is a flower, not every color is the same, there are even some leaves. Each thing on my piece is special and unique such as the flower sun, the flower clouds, the flower bird, the flower lion, the leaf grass, and the weird rose leaf plants. The texture is very different and you can tell if you felt what I created, you’d feel smooth surfaces, and soft petals. I love flowers and what they add to this world. Their color and brightness brings joy to my heart, and that is why I wanted to include them in this piece. Flowers are already God’s art, but it’s fun to see what else I can create with them. There are so many colors and I hope they can bring you as much cheer as they do for me!
colorful inspiration 24 by Melissa Jimenez Barcenas
Hey my names meli, I created this little “painting” for my art class. I was just randomly looking at other pieces of art and decided to make it colorful but simple. Here I used some simple materials found at home, paint, pencil, and paper. I was looking around my room for something to do my art on, then I remembered this word find book. I grabbed the book and started skimming through the pages. This word-find has insirational quotes ffrom people. I chose one by someone named ‘Dr. David M. Burns’ and decided to draw something that had to do with the quote. So I drew a snake with the mouth as a bonus. The snakes symbolism: “Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing. The ouroboros is a symbol of eternity and continual renewal of life.” The quote(scroll up to see) and the snake relate to one another because its talking about life and you transforming to move on forward…etc. I used the colors of the rainbow because i feel like the rainbow represents many backrounds such as people and this quote goes out to many. I used white for clouds, the louds underneath the snake represent “skys the limit” because yeah sky’s the limit so go above clouds. I also added some silver grey sprinkles for texture/fun lol.
Hello! My name is Daniella Ann Gafford, I am a 16 year old girl who is soon entering her senior year at Summit K2. Art has never been a natural skill of mine. I enjoy the process, but definitely needed some learning and practice along the way. I am one to appreciate it more so than create it. For me, art can be made from anything applicable to visualization. A goal I have been wanting to slowly accomplish is becoming more artistically motivated to make and try things that require creativity and vigor. The art piece that I created is called “Mind of Growth”. It is based on inspiration taken from online photos of Fine Line Drawings. The materials I used were: Sketch paper, a pencil, black sharpie, red marker, leaf branch, glitter nail polish and a hot glue gun. First, I drew an outline of the persons lower face with a pencil. Then, I drew over the outline with a black sharpie while filling in the lips red. Lastly, I took the leaf branch that I coated in glitter nail polish and used the hot glue gun to bind it on the sketch paper. I used MOVEMENT by making the Fine Line Drawing use the effort of the audiences eyes to envelop the lines true picture. Seeing how the lines move and shift to create the outlining of the lower face. I used RHYTHM by the overuse of one single black line. To create a sense of interest on how a simple line can create the similar RHYTHM of a drawn out face. I used COLOR by having it only highlight the most important areas of the piece. The lips in COLOR represent the importance of ones speech that is projected to the world. The leaf branch in COLOR signifies the importance of nature and its process. Finally, I used LINE to demonstrate the inspiration for making a Fine Line Drawing. The simplicity to the eyes, yet the complexity to the mind. My reasoning for picking this certain visualization of Fine Line Drawing is to represent a comparison between the mind and nature. In both systems of life, nature and the mind go through a process of growth and change. The mind is always evolving every single day, becoming more knowledgeable with earths wonders. Nature integrates a cycle of growth through physical change, always evolving in stages of a slow process to its true manifestation. The leaf branch in the mind shows how both go through a similar process of growing and changing throughout time, never staying stagnant.
Hi my name is Andrew aka Drew, I’m 16 years old and I live in Richmond, California aka the 510. For me I like to make fun and crazy art something that you don’t see as often, I like to be different. The name of the art piece is meos. Reason behind it is because it is things describe me like some of the main things. So the more colorful shoe is done by my nephew and nieces. The reason i had them do the whole shoe is because they are literally the most important thing in the world,I’m always talking to them everyday watching them or just being around them, so I thought it would have been the perfect opportunity for them to have fun. The other shoe is by me, and it talks about cali and things in it. Because everything that I love and appreciate is here. Like family food my gf just so many things over here that help make me, ME.
Hello, I’m Tatum. I am a Junior (soon to be senior) at Summit K2. I’ve enjoyed art pretty much my whole life, but only really started seriously practicing in middle school. Other forms of art such as animated movies and shows, comics, and the arts of others are what inspire me the most. I am hoping to major in art in college, but I’m not entirely sure if I want to make a career out of it. I like anime a lot. I’ve lived in El Cerrito my entire life.
This piece is called “Star Catching” as it is of a person holding a star. It is acrylic paint on canvas and is based on this other piece I did in 2018. I first thought of a different pose, using the other piece for reference, then sketched a rough draft out on paper. I painted white over this old painting I did in elementary school because it was one of the biggest canvases I had. Then, once I was satisfied with my rough draft and the white paint was dry, I sketched out a loose outline of my draft onto the canvas with pencil. After that, I started painting, starting with the base colors and larger details and ending with smaller details. I tried to use the same color palette that I did the last time (white, black, red, blue, and yellow; only really mixing the white and black).
I used emphasis with the star to focus on the center of the painting, slowly bringing the eye to its outer surroundings. I used color to emphasize the main star, but also the starry night and the person’s eyes. I used variety with the starry background to fill in the blank spots in the background and keep the piece full of life(?). I used texture with the overall lineless feel of the painting, trying to make everything feel smooth except for the stars, which are bursting and somewhat sharp.
So for the first piece, my mom bought a very large canvas for me to paint as she wanted something to fill up some wall space in our downstairs living area. I had total creative freedom, and when I was brainstorming I thought space had a cool aesthetic and tried to go for something with that. Drawing cartoonish people is my artistic specialty, so I also included that in my work. I decided to do a repaint of this piece because I have been burnt out with art for at least the past half-year with all that has been going on, but have been looking back at some of my old art and have noticed that I have improved and thought reworking some of my pieces would be good for an actual side by side comparison. There are parts of this piece that I like and dislike, but overall there is an obvious improvement.
Hi humans! My name is Juan i’m 16
I am a student at summit K2. I like playing soccer on my free times. I like watching anime and reading manga. I really love going to the pool and swimming, and my family is the most important thing to me. I was born in San Francisco but now i live in San Pablo. This piece is called “4 in 1” this is based on 4 of my favorite anime characters. Sauske, Meliodas, Kakashi, and luffy. I made this using only pencil and paper I first sketched the lower body I mixed physical traits of every character that i though would look unique.
I used emphasis in this piece. I put emphasis into the characters chest with a scar of an X to show that my favorite part was the x in the chest. I used Unity to bring harmony of the lower body and upper body together. I demonstrated shapes in my drawing. I used free form shapes to make the thing around his waist. I also used lines to make the arms and everything in the drawing. I made this piece because i think anime is has shaped me into the person i am today. These characters are my favorite due to their personality in the anime’s. I made this because it shows my favorite characters
Hello! My name is Kathy. I am an artist and I have been making art since I was young. I’m from here, in California and my favorite way to make art is through markers or digital. Another thing I love to do in my spare time is playing video games. Sometimes I make fan art of a game I play. I’m always willing to try something new when making art.
This art piece I made is called “spread and drip”. I made this for my sister since she recently got into video games and my older brother and I play with her when we have time. We each have our own controllers and we have different colors on ours but my sister's controller was plain white so I decided to spray paint it into something that represents her. I never spray painted before so I was curious on how this would turn out. I put tape on the controller where I don’t want it to spread into. I sprayed it and left it there for a moment, once it dried up I sprayed a gloss coat and let it dry again. I took off the tape and found out that I didn’t tape it well enough, some of the controller buttons got stuck and everything was sticky. I thought I ruined it but I started to resolve it by sticking needles between the holes of the buttons and taking off the paint that got stuck in between. I got so happy and relieved when I fixed it. I then used a black sharpie to put patterns on the controller.
The patterns are long and wiggly with drips near it. It represents how my sister never straight forward and takes us a long adventure to explain something. Sometimes she leaves some details out like the dots left the pattern. Both the long lines and the dots repeatedly follows each other. They both make anything look messy and that’s just how something are to really understand what is going on. Some patterns are connected but it’s mostly separated from each other to make it more interesting. Sometimes things can be connected but if it’s separated, it only captivates you more. The texture of the controller looks rough but soft at the same time. Some parts are scrunched up and some are soft and smooth, it mostly is a mistake but after seeing it, I liked the idea of having a lot of different varieties of texture.
I used my sisters favorite color and a pattern that will show how my sister is. The patter shows how it spreads and some drips along with it because every time she does something she shows it to us. She loves to tell everyone the things she knows or things she is proud of. Also the color of purple and black suits each other well and makes the black pop out more.
Hi my name is Mitcz. I am 16 years old. I have been drawing since I was 8 years old. I started with crayons and colored pencils to watercolor and acrylics. I mostly did realism with pencil but recently I have been enjoying painting with watercolors and incorporating them in the portraits I draw. I was born in the Philippines and I moved here in California when I was 7. My piece is called Freshly Harvested Ramen. As I was brainstorming for this piece, the first two things that came out at me were sunsets and ramen. I first sketched out the ramen bowl in the center of the watercolor paper where the sun would be, then I painted the background starting with a bright yellow then painting a darker yellow on top, creating an ombre effect surrounding the ramen bowl. After that, I started painting upwards using different shades of brown for the rice field, using the darker shade of brown to create emphasis on the rice plants. I used color and space to add contrast and depth in the background, varying the values of the colors yellow and brown. I used proportion in the ramen bowl to show how the ingredients in it were smaller compared to the bowl. I also used perspective to show the angle in which the bowl is positioned towards the viewer to reveal its delicious contents. To me, this painting represents beautiful sunsets spent with my family eating out. One of the most memorable food that I ate with my family was ramen. The rice field represents my love for rice as it is incorporated in all the meals I share with my family. We eat a lot of rice and eat it with almost every meal. I made this because it shows my love for food overall and reminds me of the special moments with my family in the Philippines and here in California.
My name is Demar I am 17 years old. I started art this year I learned a lot on drawing and got better and better by the week. I wanted to make this because I watched the last dance series and is a inspirational documentary. The Last Dance is about the Michael Jordan and one of the greatest teams of all time. It shows the work ethic that MJ had and his goals to get that NBA championship, it also shows the background of the scottie and dennis and where they came from.
What is life? Is it happiness and pure bliss? Or is it something more negative? Was it given to us by the power of a God up in the skies? Or was it a product of our environment? These are questions that pertain different answers, but one thing is clear when it comes to the meaning of life: is a gift. You are able to go about everyday doing whatever it is you want to do because life granted you the power to do so. “That’s why it is called the present.” This was Master Oogway’s(Kung Fu Panda series) way of reasoning for life and its been the way I’ve learned to live mine out. What’s funny is that Oogway was a turtle, so he lived out his life slowly, cherishing everything and everyone he knew because every new day was a mystery. When one thinks of life, they usually have some type of association with plants since they help us continue living and that’s why I drew EMPHASIS on the plant. The plant stands out with its vibrant color and odd shape as a question mark in order to catch the audience’s eyes. That way, the audience can focus their attention on what the plant symbolizes: life’s beauty and uncertainty. In my piece, there is a turtle drawn with a more dull green color. This helps put contrast between the turtle’s dull color and the plant’s lighter green color. By doing this, I’m putting emphasis on the turtle who symbolizes the idea that one should live life slowly so that they can appreciate what’s happening in their present rather than to focus on a future which they know nothing about. Though, not only does green also associate with life like a plant, but the COLOR also helps make the plant pop out from the black and white background. As for yellow, besides the fact that the sun is drawn in that color, it’s used in the art piece to radiate good vibes like the sun radiates energy to plants. it is reminder that one should always look at the bright side because, like a plant, doing so will help them grow. I used FORM to express depth within the present box. It’s three-dimensional to show the audience that the box isn’t just there for show, but is an integral part of the art piece, representing the “gift” of life. Each one of these design choices brings VARIETY within the art piece: 2 different colors to represent two different things, a 3D box to represent both the present and how life is a gift, and an emphasis of life/how it should be lived with the drawing of a turtle and question mark shaped plant.
My name is Christopher chan I am 17 right now, i like penguins and dogs I also mainly eat eggs for breakfast. the name of this piece is egg head. I simply took two eggs and put them over my eyes and my dogs, then i ran it through a mono color converter. I used to color in my piece by making my art black and white, my goal was to make it look more dramatic. My art also uses forms because the egg is in all of the pictures and its a three-dimensional object with length width and depth. my art uses emphasis in the color to emphasize the egg in order to mask the obscurity of the artwork. the art displays a balance between the egg, the person/dog in the photo, and the background. the piece doese’t have a hidden meaning it’s just supposed to look funny and interesting. why did I make it? I made it for fun I got the idea from a museum in Ohio when I saw it I thought it was quirky so I took some pics of it.
In The Image of Thoughts, I wanted to make something different, something inspiring, something that I thought I knew would be amazing. I originally thought of painting but that would be too simple. I saw old magazines laying around and thought to myself, “I could use these” and I did. I cut out large pieces of the magazines that I thought looked pretty and cool and cut them to fit the size of my drawing and to outline my drawing. The drawing was the first thing I had drew on a piece of paper. I chose the female’s body art since it looked incredibly beautiful in my perspective. I loved the shape of the female’s body so much and thought I would cut the magazines around the body to make it pop out more. It would catch the attention from viewers just how it caught my attention. The dark images from the magazines really shaped my art well and once the art in in some sun light from the background that is what pops my art out. It was beautiful to create and it was a happy experience for myself. I applied contrast to my art because the cut outs of my magazine outlines my drawing of a female. When is near sunlight, you see the bright female drawing but the is shaded out by the magazine cut outs. The color was really important to my art because I decided to make my drawing clear and the magazines will be cut out around the drawing of the female. I decided to use emphasis on my art because when the art of the female is displayed with bright lighting background, you see the female’s body pop out more and it catches the viewer’s attention. The magazine cut outs line around the art and it shapes the female body and it helps it stand out. The outcome of the art turned out to be better than expected and I loved it.
Hi, I’m Charlotte and I like art class. My mom is an artist and has always taught me how to create art. When I asked her what she thought I should do for my project she said she could teach me illumination. I love painting so I had fun with this project. I looked through a book of medieval illumination designs and decided I wanted to do something simple for my first illumination piece, so I chose my initial, C. The leaves and flowers remind me of illustrations in children’s books that I read growing up. I wanted to paint most of it gold to catch the eye when the light hits it. I had fun learning from my mom and creating my own masterpiece.
My name is Blanca Herrera, I am 16 years old and live in Richmond Cali. I always liked art and the ocean. I always like trying new ideas and new ways to draw or make art.
This Piece is called: The flowers of the Ocean. I was trying to think of out of the box ways to make some art and this is what came to mind. I used sticks, flowers, thorns for the color of the sea animals. I outlined them in pencil first. After i figured out what colors i wanted the sea creatures to be. Then went around the neighborhood stealing plants and flowers. I also got some from my yard. I then started cutting the flowers and placing them on the paper to make a pretty colorful piece.
I used Texture with the thorns on the puffer fish to make it look prickly. If you feel it the thorns are actually sharp. I also just wanted to have the animals pop out a bit. I also used COLOR to show how majestic and unique they are in their own way. The Turtle is green because it is so nice beautiful and comfortable. The sea horse is yellow because its vibrant happy and cute. The orange for the jelly fish symbolizes how its strong and the tentacles protect against its enemies. I also used emphasis for each of the animals. I put color on the parts i liked most of the animals. On the squid i did the body, on the jelly fish i put tentacles etc. SO i used emphasis to really bring out the qualities of the animals. I used MOVEMENT in the sense that first you look from the top down, so you see the turtle fist then the stingray. I wanted them to see which is the most important sea creatures to me.
I drew this piece because i love sea animals. I always wanted to learn more about them. The flowers are because i wanted to do something that was different but also showed other things that i like. I love flowers especially roses. Most of the plants i used was roses or the spikes from the roses.
yo ! i’m cj. i’m 16 years old, i’m from richmond, and i go to summit k2. i got a big heart and a curious mind, and i love expressing myself through my art. i got mad love for the people i surround myself with and a lot of respect for this big world we all call home. i created this zine called “three worlds away.” i made it as a way to process how i was feeling. i had asked around for any supplies and magazines that i could use, and cut images that i liked out of them and glued it to paper. after all the pages were done i bound it together with string and my mama’s sewing needle and put cool tape on the outside so it would be more smooth. i used UNITY in my zine by having all of my words be in the same font and same color paper so they would tie all of the images and pages together. i used VARIETY by using many different colors and images and backgrounds so every page is unique. i used FORM by creating a 3d art piece because i enjoy holding real things in my hand. and i used space by filling all of the pages completely with pictures and spacing the phrases out so they have flow and are easier to read. to me, this zine means more than just pieces of paper glued together. i believe that art gives a powerful opportunity to process things inwardly and to share feelings. making this zine gave me a sense of security in myself when everything seemed overwhelming and hopefully it can make others feel like they are not alone in how they feel.
Where There Is Balance There Is Peace by Aiko Odell
Hi, my name is Aiko Odell. I am a student and I am taking an art course. I really enjoy making art, it’s super relaxing and calming and it’s a way i take my mind off things that are bothering me. I enjoy Japanese style art, including anime. I think it’s super beautiful and it’s also apart of my culture. I am from Richmond, CA and I have never been to Japan but I like to admire my heritage and culture. I chose to make this piece because lately I’ve really been trying to focus on balance in my life. Everything around me has been super chaotic and crazy. It’s been super stressful for me and I want to relax my mind and body and just be chill. The koi fish are meant to resemble yin and yang. I chose koi fish because they are so gentle and peaceful. They go with the flow . I got the inspiration from my favorite show when I was little, Avatar The Last Airbender, which is now on Netflix:). I am emotionally attached to that show and it will always be my favorite show. There’s a scene where Aang meets the moon and water spirits, they were two koi fish in a pond at the South Pole and they kept balance in the world. That’s where I drew my inspiration from. Moving along I somehow lost my real sketchbook so I couldn’t draw on watercolor paper, so this is on regular printer paper. I chose to only color the little squiggly lines on the fish instead of the whole thing only because I was afraid to mess it up. I also a Lotus flower because I love flowers. I used to work at a nursery with flowers and I loved my job there but due to corona virus my mom won’t let me go to work or leave my house for that matter. So the flower is to represent my job, being surrounded by beautiful flowers gives me the feeling of security and safety. I chose all bright colors that pop and bring out the beauty in this drawing because bright colors scream happiness. I made this because I wish to reach the feeling of calamity and peace.
Hello, my name is Jenn I am a artist! I have been drawing as a kid but eventually stop at some point, drawing always been easy for me, with different images, not all. I am originally from Nicaragua im glad I have a family, any child would be happy to get adopted. I am grateful for that. Life has been a long journey and long lesson to learn. My art is called the Disappointing Truth, this is a really personal piece, something im currently going through I drew Terra and Beastboy for a reason, terra is a person who has felt betrayed, and who kept going into the darkness, who lack knowledge, and wisdom. Beastboy on the other hand is a playful, immature and energetic. First started by drawing terra and beastboy on three sheets of paper, tapped it on the wall, and choose the different tissue paper needed. Next i would sharpie parts by parts, put the tissue paper on the drawing and traced it. I would then cut that piece that i traced off the drawing paper, get some glue and a paintbrush and glue to wall and place the tissue paper. Some parti would add 2 different color tissue paper to make the character darker. Finally I had to continue that process piece by piece to make everything look as it seemed, some parts i would fill in if there were holes and that was it. I used color to get the same shade color the original picture was, it was hard to make the color how it was but i did it somehow, but also i used, Lines and shapes, the shapes were like a few like triangles ,circles, and teardrop. The line was used to outline terra, like in the original photo. We use variety and unity because i used variety of different tissue papers and unity because their unity between the two characters. Lmao.
Inspirations and Motivations by Rony Quintanilla Yanez
Hi, my name is Rony! I am a student of art. I really never got into art until my art teacher Ms.B introduced me to art. My favorite way to make art is drawing and painting.I really love going out and seeing nature and supporting my family is my number 1 priority. I was born in Berkeley (alta bates BABY!!!) and I have been raised in Richmond ever since. This piece is called “my inspirations and motivations”. It is based on 3 basketball players and 1 rapper that inspire and motivate me to work hard and become a better man. It is made with ink on lined paper. I first look for the image that I was going to draw out, then I trace it and make edits after I finish tracing. I used ink to be able to outline the actual images that I was tracing with the ink and by doing that, it made it more challenging for me to draw out the image. With the space that the lined paper is showing, I could possibly put the fans that are in the picture in the space that is left. Having inspiration and being motivated means everything to me. If you don’t have motivation, you will not do anything. If you don’t have inspiration, it would be really hard to have role models. Thankfully for me, I have both motivation and inspiration. Looking at these people and knowing what they have been through and the hard work that they put it, makes me want to push myself and work hard because I want to be successful in life. I made this because I want people to know who I look up to and these people are my inspirations and motivations.
Hi! My name is Nuvia” “I am a Summit K2 student. I have been doing art since I can remember. Out of all types of art, I enjoy drawing the most. What inspires me to draw is the history of my ancestors and recent incidents that have happened to me and those who know me.” The piece I created is called “Different”. This art piece on the differences all humans have. Even though they aren’t show on the art piece, you can see a girl (who represent every human on earth) which is around two wolves, both made of different colors. These wolves represent how the world sees this girl. The lighter wolf is the kindness that is represented as compliments. The red wolf represent the hate and insults we receive. Though they are both needed to balance eachother out, sometimes our differences can have pros and cons. I used COLOR to highlight what was important. I used SPACE behind the girl and wolves because the blank space is to represent the mindset we have. I demonstrated VARIETY by using different colors to represent monsters and heroes onto my painting.I also used VALUE to represent the background with a more water-color feeling. Fitting in means alot to so many people. We all wish to be perfect, which is why sometimes we all choose to change, sometimes for the better, or sometimes for the worst. This art piece means alot to me, cause I also have time accepting myself for who I am. Sometimes there are days where I feel myself and sometimes I cant stand my refecltion. I made this art piece to remind myself and anyone who sees it that they don’t need to hear good and bad things about themselves to appreciate how they look, sound, and are.
To make this last dance drawing i took a book with a picture of michael jordan and sketched it onto paper. I then drew and shaded the picture in pencil. After shading i used the pencil to make the darker lines stand out before i erased them. after erasing them i filled in the colored portion with a burgundy crayon. I also used the pencil to sketch the box at the bottom with the name of the drawing. This drawing means a lot to me since MJ is one of my favorite basketball players. recently a documentary on him aired so I thought it would be only appropriate to choose this topic.
Hi my name is Juanalyne I am a high school student in Summit K2. I have been doing art since I was a child. My favorite type of art to do is drawing and painting. Something I like is nature and spending time outside. I have always lived in San Pablo, but I want to move somewhere else like France or Japan. The piece of art I made is called ‘‘Two sides of Nature.’’ It is based on two different sides of nature one being at night where it’s more calming and one that is like a pink sunrise with clouds to show a beautiful morning. What I did was I used a darker pink for the sunrise on the top of the pocket of my jeans, when I was done with that I mixed the pink with white paint and painted the other half to make contrast with dark pink on top and light pink on the bottom. After that I used value by making white clouds to show a little brightness on the pink background. After I finished one side of the pocket I went to the other side and made it a night time background. What I did was I used movement by showing the moon then to the yellow fireflies. After I was done with that I used space to space out the fireflies to make more fireflies in the bottom and less on the top. This painting shows the two sides of nature one being a nice pinkish sunrise and the other being night time. This art means a lot to me because to me nature is really beautiful and peaceful and I wanted to make art to show it.
Hi, my name is Sarah Martinez. I am 15 years old and I live in Richmond CA. The type of art I like to make is landscape, portraits, and murals. I like art because you can express yourself throughout art. You can make whatever you want and no one would judge you. You can paint, sketch, etc. It gets pretty fun when you start to get the hang of it and express yourself. This mural that I made is called “Dissimilar Flowers”. For Principles of Design I used emphasis by using a black marker, and that made the flowers stand out even more. I used variety because I drew different types of flowers on my mural. For Elements of Art I used Line by outlining my flowers with a dark marker, sharpie. For Space the areas around the flowers are spaces, so the flowers aren’t squished together, it makes it look more neater when they are farther apart and you can see them more clearly. The reason I decided to draw flowers is because when I think of flowers, I think of my mom because she loves flowers a lot. And the reason I decided to call it “Dissimilar Flowers” is because the flowers I drew on here are all different. One of them are a rose, the other I think is a sunflower, and the others are tulips. Those are also the flowers my mom loves.
Hi! My name is Harjasraj and i’m a student at Summit K2. I have been listening to music my whole life and I really like listening to it. One of my favorite rappers in Big Sean and this is the cover from one if his singles “Overtime”. I really liked this song and liked the cover art for this, so I just decide to draw this out. I drew this by looking at the picture and just trying to my best make the neon sign look good because that is the first thing that you see. The Principles of Art that my drawing uses are EMPHASIS and PATTERN. I used EMPHASIS because I drew that neon sign in the back. That is pretty much the first thing that I saw because it was bright colors and that really catches your attention. I also used PATTERN because the neon sign just says “DON LIFE” in a circle. So that’s just a pattern in the background. I also used Elements of Art in my drawing and I used COLOR and SHAPE.
I used COLOR because I used very bright colors like BLUE AND GREEN for the neon sign. They are also reflected off of the object which is the neon sign. Finally I used SHAPE and I used this because I have Big Sean in the middle and I have the mic that he’s singing into the mic. Music means so much to me and I do everything with music. You also hear it wherever you go, like at the mall, stores, gyms, everywhere. There are so many different types of music and it just makes me feel good when I listen to music. So I drew one of my favorite rappers and I think that I did a good job.
Hi, My name is Manny. I’m 15 and live in San Pablo. I usually like to draw or create crafty things such as this piece. The name of the piece in question is greetings from califournia because it’s a song I really like and I feel like it captures the essence of the perception of California from outsiders. The piece shows emphasis, which is the part of the piece that grabs attention, through the hanging of the ceiling to give the illusion that they’re actually flying. It shows the principle of proportion, the art piece’s size relative to other things, because they’re meant to seem semi realistic so I made them relatively close to actual butterflies. They shows the element of shape through obviously, their shape, namely being shaped like a butterfly. Their colors were meant to kind of perpetuate that idealistic, unrealistic conception of California, very bright and colorful. To create the piece I started by sketching out a butterfly on a sheet of the tissue paper then cut it out, cut the piece of a bow for the body of the butterfly, glued them together, added some chalk pastel coloring for dimension and then attached them on the string then taped them to my ceiling. This piece is very special to me because I made it in a situation that a lot of people are now facing but many haven’t in the past. It’s a unique and tough experience but this project helped make it fun.
stream California by Grimes and greetings from califournia by the neighbourhood and California by Lana del Rey and yah !
Hi, my name is Sukriye. I am a high school student. I am from Turkey but I’ve lived in the Bay area my whole life. I like to spend time with my friends and family. I enjoy painting and drawing. I also like to travel to Turkey to see my family.
This piece is called “Folded.” I used scissors, a stapler and a book. I first started folding the books pages one by one, then after I finished with that I cut the books covers. after that i stapled them together so it could have a circle shape.
I used SHAPE to fold the pages into triangles. I also used TEXTURE because you can feel how the surface is, its smooth at the top and the front is pointy.
I used BALANCE for the book to stand straight. I demonstrated PATTERN by the folding the book in triangles in a pattern. I used UNITY by making it a circle shape making it look complete. I made this because it seemed cool to me. It got kind of boring because I had to fold all those pages. This art piece took me awhile and that’s why it means time to me. It was great at the end.
hi i’m giovanna , i’ve been attending art class for a year and learned so many different methods and forms of art. for example i’ve learned that there are many elements of art. Also, i’m really into painting even tho im not the best i’m really into a lot of vibrant colors and tie dye. Another thing,is i love using art as my therapy and cooling down and just doing whatever. The piece i made was a tie dye inspired look i went in and patted and blended the colors of the rainbow and then i went in with a black paint and went around in between the colors and then added some white hearts to not make it so boring.i made this because i love using vibrant colors and i’ve been into tye die recently and love doing whatever on my mind to relieve some stress and anxiety.
Hi my name is Francisco. I was raised in Fresno, California. I have a dog that I have had since I was 4 years old. I like to play video games and my favorite one at the moment is Warzonne. God and family are always first. I like to dance and go to parties. This art piece was inspired by a video of illusions that I saw on Instagram. It is called “The Floating Cube”. My materials were paper and pencil. I took over 2 hours to make the piece. I started by drawing the cube and then focused on the shading. I used PATTERN to draw the shape of the cube and lines. I used SPACE between the cube and the shade to show perspective. I used an equal amount SPACE between each line to make it look like lined paper. I used UNITY to put together all the parts of the image to work together to be seen as a whole. I also used SHAPE to show perspective by drawing the lower part of the cube smaller than the top half. I made this piece because I was inspired by some illusions I had seen on instagram. I was also bored due to quarantine. This piece means a lot to me because it reminds me how I got into art.
Hi, my name is Fallon Bozman. I am a 14 year old artist from El Sobrante, CA. I love to make many different kinds of art, it just kind of depends of my mood. I really love bright colors, and summer.
I named my art piece “Something Different”. I’ve always like silhouettes of girls with Afros. I don’t know why, but I have always admired them. The first thing I did was draw my silhouette. I started of by drawing a circle, and then some shoulders. After that I ripped up some magazines, looking for only specific colors; Orange, Yellow, and Pink. I then glued that on my silhouette. When it was all dry I got some water color, and painted the background with colors like, pink, red, yellow, and orange. Colors that reminded me of summer.
I used UNITY, to bring everything together. When I was choosing my shreds of paper, I chose colors that matched, so that when I colored the background everything would come together/in unity.
I used TEXTURE, so that everything would not just be one repetition, and so that my Afro-girl could stand out. If you look closely at the picture you can see that the girl is shine, because of the glue that I layered on top, and the texture of the magazine also made her more crispy. I also used SHAPES. The way that I cut the paper, I made it seem like triangles, and some circles for the curls. I used BALANCE, to make everything seem together. All the colors matched, I used bright colors, like yellow, and to make it more subtle I used reds, and pink for the background to make the silhouette pop out..
I made this piece because I love hair. I hope that when I’m older I can become a cosmetologist, but we’ll see what happens. I used bright colors, because it was very sunny that day, and also because I love bright colors, that remind me of summer. I also wanted a painting that I could hang up in my room, so not only did I make this painting for a project in class, but also for myself, for my room. I feel like this art shows who I am, the bright colors because I love summer, and the silhouette because I love hair.
Hi my name is Charria gill and im from richmond california. I am a 16 year old that loves to paint especially random items. The name of the art piece I have made is my color. In this art piece I used pattern and balance. The patterns is shown in the shapes and the balance is shown in the colors of the letters. I also used color and lines in this art piece. the colors are shown in the different shades of yellow when i mix the color the lines are shown in sharpie on the letters. I made the lines thick so they could stand out. I made this art piece because I love the color yellow and my name as well so I thought why not make the letters in different shades of yellow.I created this piece of art be mixing shades of yellow then painting them on the wood letters of my name. I then took a sharpie and drew different patterns like triangles, lines, flowers and etc.
The Pressure of Chalk by Alondra Hernandez Barcenas
Hey!My name is Alondra. And to be real I just started creating meaningful or just fun art this year, and until now my favorite ways to make art are painting and just sketching and playing around with different shapes and colors.I love spending my time with family and nature. Two things that are very important to me are my family and the friends i have been able to make this year.I was born in the beautiful land named Mexico but now i am able to live in Richmond California. This piece is titled, “The pressure of chalk”.It is based off of something that always pops into my head “Do not let one days events affect what you will make of the next day and all the days after that one, because we grow everyday and it doesnt stop until we have bloomed into our full potential”.It is made with a pencil, glue and chalk on a paper.I first made some of my chosen chalk colors into powder some thicker than others. Then I went on to sketch my vision on the paper with a pencil and then placed a few drops of glue and spread it until i was able to put all my colors one by one on each petal then it got left to dry.
I used color to make each “row” of petals different colors to highlight the meaning that goes behind the quote i had mentioned before because each day is different and what you make of one should not affect the next.I used SHAPE to show that almost all petals are the same but t we will always have a new day just like the last but what we do with it is what makes that day different like the mood (color) we give to it.I used proportion to also fit in with the shape because I made it to almost the same proportions to make it the same shapes and it resemble some petals alike with others because some days the events are unique but sometimes similar in some ways and sometimes it means stuff will happen once or twice but not exactly as the first time that thing happened because we learn..and grow from our mistakes.I used pattern to show that every time you wake up it's so you can change and grow from the last one until you realize what you are meant to do for the rest of your life and that's when you have bloomed into your last state of growing.
Change is important. And I believe everyone is here for a reason. As we are given a chance to wake up each morning. To be able to learn and maybe grow from what we did in our past.To be able to seperate our rights from our wrongs..until we bloom into beautiful people who can go out into the world and i don’t know..maybe become the best versions of ourselves..because we knew how to change and grow from our mistakes…oh right and what I wanted to mention was that family and friends also take a huge role into this because they are their to help us through our best and worst days..and THEY help us tell our wrongs from our rights because… people change people just like the decisions we make.
Hi I’m jay mi, and I’m an artist who doesn’t like to paint. although it sounds very strange but it’s true. I grew up being the ‘‘weird one’’. Therefore i wanted to create something that shows off that weird an wild side of me. I call this piece the Trippy Bunnies . i chose this name because I felt a euphoric vibe from the design. i chose these colors because in my room i have led lights and constellation lights so when i have my lights on the colors change and they have a trippy effect. with the logo i spent hours trying to perfect the outline, then i painted it black. I picked a specific color range because i wanted them to look a bit disoriented and to give off this calm and chill vibe. i used contrast to make the colors pop without using super bright colors. I didn’t want to choose just one pattern so i decided to do several to give it more of a unique feel . I painted this with a filbert and flat brushes only and that’s how i used line. Looking at the at painting now i feel like i really did accomplish what i envisioned.
this picture shows my mom and what she looks like for today every single day when she goes to work. this is how she looks when she gets home from work and when she leaves for work. every time she comes home she looks tired like in the picture. but every time she leaves she also looks slightly tired like in the picture. the way I bounced on my picture was I need everything even and I made it rhythmic so that it all came into. I used form so that it would have some short of shape and I use shape for clothes lines so that I finished the whole entire thing.
My name is Eden Ashuri, I am a student and caretaker. I enjoy making art and doing it with others. The art piece I created is called “Flower Girl”, and I made it in May of 2020. I made this piece with markers, a pencil and sharpie. I have two principles of design in my art, my art has a variety of color and pattern because I chose to make the girls hair out of colorful flowers, and in the background I have more colorful flowers in the shape of small dots. I also have two elements of art in my art piece. There is color and shape in my art, there is color in all the flowers and flower patches in the background, there is also black and white in the girl. There are plenty of shapes in my piece because the flowers are different shapes. I made this piece because flowers represent life, and the girl is supposed to be surrounded by the colorful nature of life. The girl and the flowers in this piece also represent beauty, this mean life is full of color, beauty, and life it’s self. This is important to me because when I was little my mom would tell me to think of bright colors when I was sad. the girl in this art piece is surrounded by happiness.
Hello, my name is Jayro. I am a student who attends to Summit K2. I`ve always had a passion for art, my favorite type of art is graffiti although it can be vandalizing, as long as you get permission then is all should be fine. I am originally from Guatemala, but currently staying in Richmond, California. The piece I drew is called, ¨Minds Of The Galaxy¨. I have always loved the galaxy, from my first time seeing it in a movie it looked incredible. In my art I used acrylic paint and a canvas to complete it. I used Unity to show the beautiful colors which made me feel complete. I used pattern to show the stars which is the white colored paint splatter on my art piece. I used Color to show beautiful colors ranging from purple to blue and a little white splatter to finish it off. It stands out because of the mix I did representing that of a galaxy. I used texture because I painted it on a canvas which looks rough which is okay with me. I painted this art piece to show the love I have for the galaxy. It amazes me knowing we are in a galaxy. I remember seeing it in a movie somewhere but can’t quite remember but I was around 5 years old. It caught my attention and up to this day amazes me how awesome it looks. The spiral looks really cool as well seems like a race tracks. In general whenever I see the galaxy either in a movie or game and even in a picture, it makes me feel more relax and chill. I made this to show the love I have towards our galaxy.
My name is Orr Drori, I’ve never been very artistic because I am usually self critical. When I do make art I like to make simple drawings without too many fancy materials. I usually like drawing non fictional stuff, mostly characters. I made this drawing with some markers and I just made the body by making small dashes along the shape I wanted to make, giving it a fuzzy texture. I used a few different shapes to add variety and rhythm.
In a time where physical activism is limited, I transformed my feelings of anger and hopelessness into art that will spread awareness of the injustices we see but are usually reluctant to face in our country. George Floyd was known as a "gentle giant," and everyone knew him as "Floyd." George Floyd was denied his right to live. This work commemorates George Floyd and his right to live.
In a time where physical activism is limited, I transformed my feelings of anger and hopelessness into art that will spread awareness of the injustices we see but are usually reluctant to face in our country. Breonna Taylor was a 26-year-old newly-made ER technician. This work commemorates Breonna Taylor and her right to live.
We all came from a place of darkness and started as organisms with just strands of DNA, yet managed to become these complex creatures capable of emotion and beauty, but yet also terrible destruction. We each wield such a great power that I really don't think anyone understands. We must unravel our own mistakes and strive for morality to replace our selfish desires.
This piece is meant to convey the horrors of the ivory trade, which is largely illegal but sadly continues in many parts of the world. It is destructive to the animals it affects, which include elephants as well as other tusked animals. By enforcing stricter laws against the trade and spreading awareness, we can help these animals live in freedom.
This piece conveys a political message about the state of American immigration today. It depicts the barriers many immigrants must face, and the struggles present within the United States, in a bright, colorful scene in the U.S.-Mexico border.
This piece depicts two hands grasping the towers of an Indian mosque. It communicates the capacity of faith in its different forms to unite people in times of distress and difficulty, such as the present-day pandemic that has swept through the world.
This piece represents how us humans are in the world. Most people are so attached to technology, that they are blind to global warming and other dangers to our Earth. The man is seen paying attention to his phone, rather than the background of a burning forest. Hopefully this sheds more light on how we treat our planet.
Firstly I have one about the environment, a piece to symbolize deforestation and the cruelty of putting wild animals in cages. Not being able to go back to their homes which are destroyed by human lodging or construction, endangered species are put up on display for our amusement. A cruel system that doesn’t benefit the animal in any slightest way but is a form of entertainment for us. The tiger is the biggest key recognized for its beautiful pelt yet small numbers lead it to extinction.
Materials used: Acrylic pain, black ink, watercolor, wood pieces, (or just multimedia)
Since I was younger I would collect the seashells across the vast shorelines of the ocean. Gazing into the distance it seemed like it could go on forever. Watching the waves was so tranquil and I wanted people to feel the tranquility of the ocean, as they gaze into this vase.
A simple word is what everyone wants in life, recognition. The freedom to pursue without discrimination. Those whose voices are suppressed face further rath from prejudice that came from centuries of abuse. They shouldn’t have to be afraid, they deserve freedom. The Afro of a man staring straight ahead emphasized by the color representing determination. We do not know what will happen but all we can hope is that change will arise. This issue will not be in the background anymore and the people who want change should confront it. The way they deal with it will change society but they have to be careful in the manner in which they pursue the issue at hand, systematic racism.
